Trains between Downham Market and Ely will be cancelled at the weekend

Trains between Ely and Downham Market will be cancelled on Sunday so work can be carried out restoring the tracks to the “correct position”. Network Rail has told Downhamnews the service closure is necessary because the ground on this stretch of track is drying out with the lack of rainfall in the area. As a result of the dry weather, ground movement has caused the tracks to become out of direct alignment. Services have been running at a reduced speed to minimise the chances of any disruption and remedial work has been carried out, a Network Rail spokesman told us. He added: “We recognise that the timing of these closures is not ideal and we apologise for any disruption this may cause. It is absolutely essential that we carry out this work to keep the railway running efficiently and safely.” The work will take place between 12.45am on Sunday to 3.50am on Monday.
