Gold Star Amateur Boxing Club welcomed the Mayor of Downham Market to the official opening in the newly refurbished ATC Hut last night.
Mayor Robin Pegg, accompanied by Deputy Mayor Cllr David Sharman was greeted by Youth and Community Co-ordinator Bob Casey, North Lynn Discovery Centre Manager Jimmy Yallop and Gold Star Boxing Club coaches Steven Kirby, Mel Green and John Mills. The Councillors enjoyed a tour of the facilities while young boxing amateurs began their rigorous warm up of jogging, jumping and press-ups.
It was a great night with smiles and laughter shared between organisers and councillors. People of all ages can now come together, train hard and enjoy themselves in the resurrected ATC Hut equipped with punch bags, skipping ropes and boxing pads and with friendly boxing coaches on hand to support.
Boxing is great way to meet new friends, get in shape and is an excellent addition to our developing town. The club has already attracted a lot of interest with an attendance last night of over 30 young people.
There is an excellent atmosphere within the club, a mixture of discipline and learning in a superb environment. The coach’s passion for boxing and youth development is inspirational and drives on the participants to push and better themselves.
Gold Star Boxing Club sessions are currently from 7pm-9pm on Tuesday and Thursday at the ATC Hut (just at the top of Howdale Road near the football pitches) but more sessions are planned as numbers grow.
