On Sunday 11th February, the ‘RAF Downham Market Memorial Trust’ erected a banner to highlight the site of their future RAF Downham Market Memorial. The memorial will be on the old RAF land which is adjacent to the road leading to Downham Home & Garden.
The RAF Memorial Trusts plans to create a memorial to commemorate the Aircrews who failed to return to RAF Downham Market from their missions, and to ensure that they are never forgotten. Within the memorial, they also plan to create a resource to help families of the airmen research their history.
Some familiar business local to Downham have supported the trust including CGM Designs, Downham Home & Garden, and also the ‘218 Squadron Association’ from RAF Marham.
Roving Educational Events Trailer
To help spread the word, the trust are also creating an ‘Events Trailer’. It will house an eight-foot-long scale model of the vision for the memorial and will showcase photos of the airfield and the local area from the time.
The trailer will travel to military shows, museums, and country events to raise awareness and support for the memorial project. The Educational trailer will inform people, young and old, about the impact the Aircrews had, not only on the outcome of the war but also on the local area.
