There will be an extra spark to this year’s Downham Market Carnival as local runners Cath Duhig (Ryston Runners) and Tina Cawkwell (Downham Dollies) bring the 1948 OlympicTorch to town as part of a 170-mile trail being staged to celebrate Olympic year.
Beginning at Lynnsport, King’s Lynn on Saturday 2 June the 1948 Torch Trail will see scores of runners and cyclists transport the flame around the area and join celebrations across the borough.
The torch will arrive at Heygates Mill at approximately 1.00 pm on 4 June where it will lead the carnival parade en route to the Howdale. Once at the playing field there will be a chance for people to get up close to the torch and take pictures before a delegation of local school students leave with it at 2.30 pm taking it to Wimbotsham.
British, European and world champion racewalker Cath Duhig and member of local women only running group Downham Dollies, Tina Cawkwell were nominated to carry the torch on the Downham leg of the trail as they both work to promote and support sports and activity in the area.
1948 Torch Trail co-ordinator, Paul Brandon, said, “We’re really excited about the tour and want as many people as possible to join in the celebrations. We’re delighted that Downham Market Town Council has invited us to be part of the carnival – it’s set to be a great occasion.”
The 1948 Torch Trail is being organised by the West Norfolk Sports Council and is part of the Let’s Get Active 2012 campaign – a year-long campaign showcasing sports and activities on offer in West Norfolk in Olympic year.
