A hot and sunny Sunday saw the local community turn out for the Downham Games.
The event, now in its second year, took place at the Memorial Playing Fields on Sunday 7th July. It was visited by over 200 people who were able to enjoy free sports tasters sessions and an athletics competition.
The fun sports day races were particular highlights of the day, these being an opportunity for very young children to join in with their families in the egg and spoon race, sack race, obstacle race and tunnel ball.
Event organiser, Frances Rayner said “I found it very heart warming to watch families out together having fun. With the competition over it was all smiles and laughter and a real pleasure to set up race after race so that adults and children alike could join in.”
Sports taster sessions included cricket, archery, croquet, squash and tennis while the athletics competition included javelin, shot put, long jump, high jump, 100m and 400m races.
Qualified coaches helped to support all individuals to ensure they got the most from the event and spent the day very impressed with the enthusiasm and ability of everyone taking part.
Frances added ‘This year Active Norfolk and Ryston Runners were a great support in helping to get this event off the ground and ensure it went smoothly on the day.”
“Volunteers from both organisations along with many very committed individuals from the community all came together early Sunday morning to set the event up and then stayed to help run individual events.”
“Without them it would not have been the success it was.”
