Celebrations are underway with a ‘design a celebration flag competition’ having been run with 5 local Primary Schools. Clackclose, Hillcrest, Wimbotsham, Denver and the Montessori school at Stow Bardolph have all been working hard to produce designs that went before the judges on the 22nd February. A panel of 6 judges had a very difficult job deciding on the best design. Mayor of Downham Market, Cllr Val Starling was amongst the judges who said it was lovely that we had so many entries of such a high standard and it was really difficult to choose an outright winner. I would like to say well done to all the pupils who entered as we thought all their pictures were excellent and have helped make a positive start to our Olympic celebrations in Downham Market’. Results of the competition are to be unveiled soon and the winning entry is to be created by students from Downham Market High School who is keen to work in partnership with the Town Council so that we can produce a professional flag that will stand the elements on the town square.
On the 7th April a flag raising event will be held in the Town Square between 10am and 2pm where the winning flag will be raised. Besides the flag being raised we are organising health and fitness displays, fun sporting activities and an opportunity to talk about healthy living with the experts. We also hope to have some motivating and inspirational music from one of our local bands.
This is one of a series of events hosted by the Town Council that will help the town to celebrate the games.
